Are you a caregiver for an individual with Alzheimer’s or dementia looking for a meaningful outing with your loved one? This program could be your answer.

We invite you to join us on this exciting new approach to increase communication between you and your loved one. No art experience is required for this program – the art is simply used to facilitate conver-sation and connectedness. Alzheimer’s Services of Cape Cod & the Islands is offering Arts and Alzheimer’s programs at museums and galleries around the Cape, providing an opportunity for those with memory impairment and their caregiver(s) to connect in a meaningful way through a moderated conversation stimulated by selected artwork.

These groups are free, safe, and confidential allowing for freedom of self-expression and open conversation. All art and conversation groups are led by trained facilitators who are sensitive to the disease. As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, one tends to lose functional abilities; our facilitators are trained to understand both the losses in the brain as well as the parts that still work. We know that a person’s ability to understand and respond to art and music can still be appreciated on an emotional level and can sometimes be a gateway to past stories and memories. In fact, research shows that visual stimulation through art can help stimulate memory and enhance conversation among individuals who have a dementia. Hence, participants engage not only with the art, but also with other members of the group.

Caregivers also report feeling less isolated and depressed through group participation. Through the process of sharing in discussion and positive reinforcement, participants have an opportunity to bond with others in their group, helping to promote a sense of well-being and reduce stress.

The program is appropriate for those with early to mid-stage Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.Admission is free, but space at each session is limited – Reservations are required.Sessions may be rescheduled at ASCCI’s discretion.
